McCulloch PM605 Chainsaw
Animation / Renderings / CAD

The project was done by Brad Crooks, Stephen Hodson, and myself as the final project for our E128 Advanced CAD class at UC Berkeley. I did all of the parts shown below (engine case, crank assembly, carburetor assembly, oil pump assembly, bottom plate, clutch assembly) as well as a number of others. The parts were modeled in Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 2.0 and rendered and animated in 3D Studio MAX. There were many hundreds of hours put into this project over about 2.5 months.

Given the assignment to model and animate a semi-complex machine, the choice was a no-brainer. My relationship with chainsaws goes way back. I suppose the fact that the ProE Wildfire 2.0 splash screen had a 3d model of a Mcculloch Eager Beaver might have had something to do with it as well. I think we gave theirs a run for its money: ProE Chainsaw

The animation didn’t turn out quite as well as I had hoped, and due to some unfortunate mistakes by parties who shall remain nameless, it was finished at 7:55am on the day it was due at 8:00am. The random black squares that appear and disappear were a product of the splicing or soundtrack addition process, and it was too late to remove them.

Final Animation (63MB avi)

The video uses the Dixv MPEG-4 codec. If you don't have it, it can be downloaded for free from their site.
